3 ways to nourish your life
Welcome to the Nourish your life series on Living your most nourishing life.
Living a nourishing life means more than just putting good food into your body and getting yourself to the mat a few times a week.
Living a nourishing life, a life guided by the 8 limbs of yoga, means being a steward for the earth, for each other and for yourself.
As we enter into the New Year, I will begin a weekly blog post with practical everyday ways for all of us to truly LIVE our yoga.
We will begin on the mat; yet not in our asana practice, in our cleaning practice… and just watch as mindful, conscious choices here, will begin to spill off the mat into the world in countless ways as we grow and nourish our lives together.
There are 8 limbs of yoga, the 2nd limb is about personal observances or niyamas.
The 1st niyama is sauca, meaning purity and cleanliness. As we deepen our yoga practice, both on and off the mat it is important that we cultivate an awareness of how we show up in the world. If we are to care for our bodies, our minds, our earth and all beings sharing the earth we must strive to walk gently, to speak kindly and to leave our world a little cleaner, happier and purer than before… This, of course, is much easier said than done.
It’s a matter of becoming mindful; identifying our core values, beliefs and desired feelings and then, with strong determination remaining true to ourselves and our convictions.
As true yoga practitioners, this inevitably means being stewards of the earth.
No, you don’t need to sell your house, get off the grid and only eat food that you grow yourself (although this is an amazing idea, if it’s the root you’d like to take). You need not beat yourself up over each packaged food you buy or latte you drink. However, it does mean that you find meaningful ways to simplify, consume less, give more and educate yourself about what is and what isn’t harmful to yourself, your family and the planet.
If it’s harmful to a bug, a mouse or a bird, it’s harmful to you and the planet, these things can not be separated.
So, take a look at labels, watch a few documentaries, learn about toxins in cosmetics, cleaning supplies etc and take the time to get informed. This will put you in a power position. You will have the ability to chose consciously with your eyes wide open and allow every purchase to be a vote towards health and healing or dis-ease and damage.
Seemingly small, everyday choices can and will have tremendous impact when enough people begin to make the same educated choices.
Here are a few seemingly small, yet potentially great big steps that you can make towards ridding yourself and your environment of harmful toxic chemicals:
1. Make your own household cleaner with just three simple ingredients
You will need:
A dark coloured spray bottle
1 drop of Thieves essential oil for every 1 oz of water (about 20 drops for a 20 oz bottle)
2-3 tbsp’s of vinegar
Fill the rest of the bottle with purified water and you’re good to go.
Not only are you caring for the earth by not buying toxic chemicals to clean, you are boosting your own immune system while cleaning and helping to purify the air, and household surfaces with a naturally potent anti-microbial and anti-fungal essential oil. Now that’s a WIN WIN! ~ if you’d rather not make your own, you can buy a Thieves Household cleaner already made…plus a whole line of thieves products for body & home)
2. Make your own yoga mat cleaner
A 3 oz glass spray bottle
10 drops if purification essential oil
4 drops of lemon or citrus fresh essential oil
fill the bottle with purified water, shake and spray!
Your mat, your practice, your nose and your mind will LOVE you!
3. Go veggie (at least a few times a week)
Even better, grow your own organic fruits & veggies, all year round with an aeroponic indoor growing system.
Simple steps made with an intention of kindness to help you care for yourself and your body, this day and everyday of the year.
Live your most nourishing life, one simple step at a time
If you’re just getting started with Essential oils, I always encourage people to begin with the premium starter kit, it’s the BEST value and the best way to begin to use some of the most popular, widely used oils (all of the oils mentioned above come in the kit), plus it comes with a diffuser and samplers of Ningxia Red!!
