New Year, New You?
New Year’s Resolutions are a big tradition in many people’s lives… Yet, do they really work?
This is the time of year when fitness & weight loss centres fill up, diet aids sell out and exercise equipment gets dusted off from the months of hibernation in the basement or closet… More often than not, these resolutions last less than a month and we find ourselves falling back into old patterns and unhealthy routines…
About 90% of resolutions are not kept, with 80% being discarded by the end of January…
This year, I would like to suggest that, instead of a resolution, we take a look at the core or root of the challenge and commit to letting go of what no longer serves us, while embracing the possibilities of each and every new day, hour, moment… Rather than focussing on the New Year, let’s focus on being happy, content and fulfilled in our own skin and setting realistic, meaningful and tangible goals in order to move towards a healthier, stronger and happier being, regardless of what time of year it may be.
This is not a resolution, it’s a revolution!
It’s time to look at our whole self, rather than simply compartmentalize our perceived issues into labels like ‘fat’, ‘unhealthy’, ‘inactive’, ‘poor’, ‘over-worked’… Let’s not resolve but rather re-think, and re-new ourselves, while re-gaining faith and confidence in the innate ability of our body, mind and soul to heal us once given the proper tools and supports to do so… All of the answers are inside of us, if we take the time to listen and subsequently, the time to act.
Each day is a day to start fresh, re-group and re-focus our energies on what we feel is right for ourselves, our bodies, minds and our souls… Be patient, be gentle, and most of all just be.
Be still and listen to your own inner wisdom.
If you’d like to lose weight, first reflect on why you have put weight on… When did it begin? Do you need to move more, eat less, eat better, express more, let go of fear, anger, hurt? Dig deep.
If you’d like to spend less and save more; first reflect on why you are over spending and on what. Your spending is a direct reflection on your life priorities – do your spending habits align with what is important to you and your core values? What compels you to shop & spend? Do you use shopping as therapy, as a way to avoid what is really going on inside of you? Do you spend in order to ‘keep up with the Jones’’? Who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to prove? Asking these questions will open you up to yourself…
Considering the root cause of your challenge(s) with honesty, kindness and non-judgement will bring clarity and set you on a trajectory towards successfully changing those negative patterns… Whether it is weight, stress, time, money… self-reflection is the key to positive change.
A New Year, a new you? I believe the ‘new you’ has always been inside of you… It is not new, it simply needs non-judgemental encouragement, support, loving-kindness and compassion in order to shine through.
Today you are YOU, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” Dr. Seuss
Enjoy this year, this month, this week and this moment. It is yours; yours to create. Breathe in deeply and enjoy it with gratitude. Find ways to be good to yourself and those around you…
