DIY Essential Oil Infused Lip Balm
As part of the nourish your life series, I will be bringing you recipes and info on how to simplify, nourish and detox your life!
Here is a super quick, easy and AMAZING recipe for making your very own essential oil infused lip balm… and if I do say so myself, it’s even better than Burt’s Bees!
Why make your own lip balm, or for that matter any body care product, you ask??
Sadly, the majority of companies making cosmetics and body care products are not concerned with your health & well-being, they are really only looking at making as much money as they can. Even Burt’s Bees, which began as a grass roots road side stand is now owned by Clorox! So, with money as the goal, ingredients in most products are often of poor quality, poorly made and full of toxins that do more harm to your body than any possible good.
A great resource for you if you’d like to learn more is the Environmental Working Group (EWG) here you can find all sorts of info about the various products out there (and maybe in your makeup bag or under your counter right now!) and the toxins they contain.
So, since so many of us love out Lip Balm, I thought I’d begin with this yummy recipe to help you begin to build health through your day to day choices… Here’s to nourishing your life!
You will need:
- 4 tbsp jojoba, almond or olive oil
- 1 tbsp grated Beeswax or beeswax pearls
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/4 tsp vitamin E (or pop a few Vit E capsules and squeez out the liquid)
- 5-10 drops essential oil of choice ( I prefer citrus’ such as lemon, lime, grapefruit or citrus fresh and peppermint oils)
warm the oils, beeswax and honey in a small stainless steel pot or glass bowl. Be sure to warm it slowly. A double boiler will work well. Stir until the beeswax is completely melted and blended. Remove from heat and quickly whisk in Vit E and Essential oils. Once all ingredients are blended, quickly transfer the blend into your lip balm containers (Lip Balm Tubes or Tins work well) and allow to set for 3 hrs.
This recipe will make about 3 tubes or tins depending on the size you choose. So, for about $.25-.50 a piece compared to a store bought, potentially toxic brand you’ve got yourself a little stock pile of yummy, soothing lip balm to keep for yourself or share with friends!
Enjoy and stay tuned for more in the nourish your life DIY series.
